Taurus Pt-22 Reviews - Nothing like browsing endless plastic and metal tables at a gun show. I remember as a kid my dad pulling me through the doors of every show in a 60 mile radius. He never needed more, but he enjoyed browsing the "oldies but goodies" as he called them.

My father, of course, was referring to the pistols and rifles that the industry had put by the wayside. In the years since that childhood trip, I myself have seen many gems and even a few lemons in fairgrounds, fairgrounds, and scattered boards of farm buildings.

Taurus Pt-22 Reviews

The predecessor of the Taurus 22PLY, the PT-22 is an extremely compact pocket pistol chambered in .22 long rifle. With a black alloy frame, the gun measures just over four inches tall and 5.25 inches. The 2.75-inch barrel works well if you take the "handgun" label to heart.

But what attracted me to the Taurus PT-22 was its width. At just 1.3 inches wide, it's the perfect size for my thin hands and fits well in my small grip, when I want to shoot one-handed.

But before you think you can give up the use of your other hand, remember that the Taurus PT-22 is double duty. For shooters accustomed to the heavy trigger associated with DAO pistols, the pull will be a bit of a concern. For shooters like myself spoiled by feather-like triggers on my Glock and Springfield pistols, the long DAO takes some work.

The PT-22 used for this review came with a 10-pound trigger. Compared to the 6.5-7 pounds of my usual carry gun, the Springfield Mod.2, this was a big departure.

Compensating for the lack of a light trigger, the Taurus always uses an interesting flip-up barrel reminiscent of the Beretta 21 Bobcat. The PT-22 barrel goes airborne with the push of a button and is perfect for shooters who struggle with a traditional semi-automatic pistol slide. The release is easy to maneuver and is located next to the trigger. The ammunition slides right down into the chamber and the barrel snaps back into place with little force. Whether I can see the practicality of this design for shooters who can't mount a slide, or is it because I find the barrel a bit of a novelty, it's my favorite part of the gun.

Taurus Pt-22 Reviews

The first time I pulled the Taurus to the range, I was ready to shoot. Ammo was cheap so I had a varied supply. Ready to spend hours on the PT-22, I shot it at 10-15 minute intervals for an hour and a half before calling it quits for the day.

While the .22 plinking is always fun, index finger beats are annoying. This was my first adventure with Taurus. Subsequent trips became easier and I was able to do a lot more as I gained power and got used to the design of the PT-22.

My shot placement started well, but fell apart after a long, hard trigger pull that put a number on my index finger. (Photo: Jackie Billings)

When you go to the range with this little fellow, make sure you set your targets very close to your shooting position. The size of the caliber ultimately means you won't be carrying it out to 25 yards. I found that the maximum for this gun is 15 yards and I can hit the paper if I want to - and even that is annoying at times. I was most successful at the 3-7 yard range.

Taurus has a fixed front sight with a back sign behind it. The targets are accurate and the first jumps I made were clustered to the right of the center of my flaming pink target. As I continued to shoot and the DAO trigger began to get the most of me, my shots began to spread through the rest of the paper. My last magazine of the day was almost completely empty outside of pink and black. Based on these results, I knew it was time to call it a day.

During the days I spent testing and fiddling with the PT-22, I can say that I was most pleased with the reliability. It's no secret that making Taurus a reliable hand has had its ups and downs. Early in my gun ownership I had a PT-709 that worked flawlessly. On the other hand, the full barrel of my Taurus CIA revolver went out from under my shooting buddy's feet one day. This necessitated a call to Taurus and a brand new revolver courtesy of the Brazilian manufacturer.

The PT-22 has served me well. I won't lie, it can jam (like most .22's) if not fed the right ammo. Fortunately, it's not too picky and as long as I stay away from reloads (if I ever come across one) and dirty ammo, we're good. During the week of testing for this review, I experienced only two extraction failures, which were resolved when I switched to CCI ammo.

The magazine holds eight rounds, and the pop-up design allows additional rounds to be chambered, giving shooters a total of nine rounds. It is by no means a primary carry weapon. I wouldn't trade this pea skier for a Springfield, Sig, Smith or Glock, all of which are in the double digits.

However, if you need a little extra action and prefer to have a second weapon if the thing really hits the fan, it's worth it. Whether in a pocket holster, in ankle gear or riding in the thigh position, owners can carry this Taurus with ease and discretion.

For concealed carriers who refuse to carry without a safety, this pistol has a manual thumb safety on the left side of the pistol near the slide. It's easy to get it out and back in - just remember to do it before you shoot.

Again, I wouldn't put it as my sole source of firepower on an IWB platform, especially due to its lack of power and inability to go the distance, but in a pinch (especially if the attacker is on me) it's plenty. Punch to get you out of a scary situation.

Taurus Pt 22: Is This .22lr Gun A Total Misfire?

The Taurus PT-22's compact frame is perfect for shooters with small hands who struggle to securely hold a larger frame. (Photo: Jackie Billings)

The PT-22 is a sneaky weapon in the sense that it looks pointless. Shooters who want to integrate a non-threatening, wallet-friendly gun into their lives will find themselves favoring the PT-22. While the trigger isn't exactly a deal breaker, it can be difficult for some.

While you won't see me on the range with the PT-22 all day, it's perfect for those days when you need to use thigh or ankle gear with a small pistol for good events. Also, if I know I'm going somewhere shady and need a little more yardage, I can look to the PT-22 to ride along. Taurus PT-22: 2 minute review and explanation - While the last three Taurus firearms I've reviewed have been mostly positive, my history with these products hasn't always been pretty. I think Taurus is making quite a name for itself with recent releases like the GX-4, but I wanted to check out some of its older weapons.

Taurus Pt-22 Reviews

This time I chose PT22. I chose this because I recently gave a very glowing review of their newest .22 caliber pistol, the TX-22.

It's basically a Beretta 21, a bit of a Bobcat in looks and function, but no match for a Beretta. The pull-up barrel and slide look cheap at first glance, and the frame doesn't do things any favors. Polymer substrate looks like cheap plastic. I just don't care about the look of the gun. Functionally, all Bobcat parts are here. The only real difference is that Taurus has done a better job of publishing the magazine issue. This design choice deserves appreciation. The texture of the fish scales on the slide is also very nice. But overall, it doesn't feel like something I want to shoot.

PT22 is not great, but
