Taurus Pt-22 Poly - Taurus PT-22: 2 minute review and explanation - While the last three Taurus firearms I have reviewed have been mostly positive, my history with their products has not always been pretty. I think Taurus is making a much better name for itself with recent releases like the GX-4, but I wanted to check out some of their older firearms.
This time I chose the PT22. I chose this because I recently gave a very glowing review of their newest .22 pistol, the TX-22.
Taurus Pt-22 Poly
It's basically a Beretta 21 with the look and feel of a Bobcat, but not quite a Beretta. The barrel and slide look cheap at first glance, and the frame doesn't help that either. The polymer bottom looks like cheap plastic. I just don't like the look of the gun. Performance-wise, all Bobcat parts are here. The only real difference is that Bika did better with the magazine release. This design choice deserves praise. The texture of the fish scales on the slide is also very neat. But overall, it doesn't look like I want to take pictures.

The PT22 isn't great, but it's not the worst I've ever shot. The best way to describe the feeling of shooting the PT22. It does the bare minimum, but what did I expect from a budget of 0.22? I want my .22s to be fun, but shooting this pistol actually made my job a job. Perhaps I spent too much time with the newer Taurus rifles. I'm certainly spoiled by Taurus' recent efforts in 9mm and .22 LR.
Accuracy also leaves a lot to be desired. I don't expect pinpoint accuracy from a .22 with a 2 inch barrel, but the PT22 doesn't seem accurate. This becomes more apparent when its big brother, the TX-22, has above-average accuracy. Works well at ten yards or less. Just don't wait any longer.
PT22 is also unreliable. I don't need to experiment with six different types of ammo to get a gun to work flawlessly. This thing has failed miserably in every other magazine. I may have only finished one gun, but others have shared similar experiences. This has really become a big problem in the province.
Don't buy this gun, I don't care how cheap it is. Taurus has greatly improved its craft and is still reasonably priced. Better to pick up a TX-22 for an extra $70 at $299. I cannot recommend the Taurus PT22 highly enough.

Richard Douglas is a veteran shooter, outdoorsman and technician. He is the founder and editor of Scopes Field and a columnist for The National Interest, Cheaper Than Dirt, the Daily Caller, and other publications. We're in the second full week of September, and we Minnesotans know this isn't the first snowfall. I got really behind and thought I was done with the hot weather handgun series for good. The latter, the Taurus PT 22 Poly, is a small pistol. Two things immediately came to mind about this, so let me talk about them:
1. The average Joe does not recommend carrying a .22 long rifle for self defense. Although the average Joe realizes that Sirhan Sirhan killed Robert Kennedy with an Iver Johnson .22 cadet and that the Israeli Mossad killed many terrorists with a Beretta Model 70 in .22 LR. If any of the above 0.22 users were facing multiple targets, the cost of removing the first target would likely leave them high and dry.
2. To those who say that Thor makes poor quality firearms, all I can say is they are "wrong". Yes, I'm sure some lemons leave the factory like any manufacturer. I had to send two new SIGs and two new Para Ordnance pistols to the factory for repairs to make this happen.

So, I said...Taurus makes great handguns and the PT 22 Poly is certainly a great handgun.
I'm going to do something I don't usually do, and that's starting with photos of targets. I think they speak well of what the PT 22 Poly is capable of and you'll be happy to see them first, then the specs and quality of the gun. I should also note that almost everyone who has tried this pistol has shot it as well as I have and I am very impressed with this pistol.
Having owned a Beretta 21 and a stainless steel Taurus PT22, I can say that I much prefer this pistol to the other two. Handling, ergonomics and accuracy are all at a high level. The PT 22 Poly has one feature that is both a pro and a con, and that is its width. At 1.1 inches wide, it's a bit fat for a pocket pistol, though it will certainly fit well in most pants pockets if you're using a decent pocket pistol. The width is also a big positive for me as the insert puts the trigger exactly where it needs to be and helps get the most accuracy out of the little pistol. When I first got my hands on the little Taurus .22 polymer I knew I had to get it and since it retails for just a hair over $200 it was a great deal!
Taurus also updated the profile of the PT 22 Poly by moving the front of the trigger guard to the front of the frame, giving it a sleek and arguably “sexy” look.
Taurus Model Pt 22 Pistol
The PT 22 has a capacity of 8 + 1, but unfortunately only comes with one magazine. The trigger only pulls twice, very smooth, fairly long but perfectly manageable at 6.5 pounds according to my Lyman digital trigger pull scale.
The views are very small, but they are actually very useful. Choosing the exact angle of the front camera from the available light makes it visible more than a small landscape. I think the goals back up that claim.
There are three controls, each located on the left side of the gun. The first is slide safety. It is located behind the slide and is easy to operate with the thumb of my shooting hand. It makes a very positive "click" when you turn it on and off and is very unlikely to come out by accident. The next control is the publish magazine button. Only at the back and down the frame is the trigger guard, and while it's quite large for a small pistol, it sticks out about the same distance from the frame, requiring my hand to be positioned so that the thumb is roughly at a right angle. The magazine was released with the pistol. The third control is the barrel release lever located behind the trigger guard towards the top of the frame. Push the lever forward and the barrel will rise. This is great for loading + 1/8 + 1 rounds and is a very safe way to check if the chamber is loaded or loaded.
I really like this pistol and have carried it in the Remora holster on my waist and in my pocket. Lightweight at 10.8 oz. His weight is progressing well in both places.

If you're looking for a backup or defensive pistol and want it to be compact and affordable, the Taurus PT 22 Poly deserves a close look. I think you will enjoy this!
