Ferry Tanks For Aircraft - A ferry tank is an auxiliary fuel tank, usually temporarily attached to a motorized device from which it supplies fuel. A ferry tank makes it possible to increase the range or lifespan of the vehicle or aircraft. Ferry tanks are widely used in both civil and military aviation. Civil aviation and transport aircraft use internal tanks, while fighter aircraft use external tanks.
In aviation, ferry tanks allow additional aircraft range to reach destinations beyond the specified aircraft range where a stopover for refueling is not available. For example, if an aircraft with a range of only 1,000 miles is to be delivered from North America to Hawaii, which is more than 2,000 miles away, the aircraft would need a ferry tank to provide it with enough fuel to travel additional miles.

The first ferry tanks were drop tanks that fitted on the outside of aircraft and were used primarily by the military to allow fighter jets to travel longer distances and remain in combat longer, giving air forces advantages in using them on their planes. But they also made the planes vulnerable to small arms.

Armed forces often use external ferry tanks, which allow aircraft to travel farther or stay in combat longer. For example, external ferry tanks enabled the Israeli Air Force's attack on the Osirak nuclear reactor, known as Operation Opera.
The external tanks refill the main tank when it is empty. Empty external tanks can be discarded in flight, known as drop tanks, or can be retained. The Quest Kodiak 100 is the perfect aircraft for the undeveloped airstrips where Mercy Air operates. The Kodiak can fly under 1,000 feet at full gross weight, climb at more than 1,300 feet per minute, and at touchdown it takes just 705 feet to stop at its full gross weight of 7,305 pounds — even on rough, bumpy, bumpy trails.
Mercy Air's Kodiak came to Air-Mods for a durable 300-gallon tank for its flight from Maine to South Africa.

With 315 gallons of Jet-A fuel in the wings, the ferry's 300-gallon aluminum tank would only fill 222 gallons to safely fly the longest legs of its six-day voyage. This installation allowed the second row seats to be retained, allowing for a (slight) change of venue for the off-duty co-pilot.
The aluminum ferry tank features internal baffles to reduce fuel transfer back and forth and has dimensions that allow it to slide into the cargo door and then slide right out. Because the tank sits directly over the center of gravity, the weight reduction from fuel economy has almost no impact on the Kodiak's center of gravity.

Installing a fixed tank or two in this caravan doubled the fuel capacity from 320 gallons to 640 gallons...certainly enough fuel to fly the longest leg of his trip to Kazakhstan in Central Asia.
Here the second tank is secured in place, using the existing seat/loader rails as anchor points.

This 1975 cardinal was a fun project! Typical aircraft missions include voyages from the owner's home base in Florida, across the Caribbean Sea to South America, back and forth to Washington State and other long haul non-stop flights. In addition to the aircraft's current fuel capacity, long non-stop durations over the Caribbean will require additional fuel...and the owner will want reserves while flying to remote parts of the world. While installing the 160-gallon Turtle Pac was a weight and balance challenge, it wasn't much of an issue. The bigger problem is topping up the oil supply while driving. With a flight capacity of almost 20 hours on route and an understanding of every Lycoming's normal oil consumption, being able to top up engine oil in the air is very important. That's the fun part! We designed and built an oil reservoir (pictured below behind the co-pilot's headrest) with our own engine matched oil pump.

As seen above and below, we built a structure that contained a 160 gallon Turtle Pac. Since we engineered the exact placement of the bladder within the aircraft's center of gravity limits, we want to ensure that the weight does not change in flight.

This 231 came to us a few months ago and needed paint and interior. The owner is torn between two options: 1) sell it as is or 2) have it painted, replace the interior, install ferry tanks and fly it back to Italy. We are glad the owner chose option 2 and below are the results.
The owner is on a tight schedule - the plane must be back in Italy by August. Fortunately, Reese Aircraft/KD Aviation, Inc. had a vacancy. We took the plane to the paint shop and Reese flipped it over on schedule as promised.

Next up is the interior. Behind the custom installation of the ferry tank, Shane replaced the original interior with new side panels, carpet and headliner. The owner is waiting for the plane to be returned to Italy to have the seats restored in matching Italian leather - beautiful!
The ferry tank installation includes two Turtle-Pacs—a 66-gallon tank that typically houses the two rear seats and an 18-gallon tank for the storage compartment.
An 18 gallon tank in the storage compartment adds an option for an extra margin of safety for those long legs across the Atlantic.

This new Baron was flown direct to us from the factory and arrived at 12.8 hours on the Hobbs meter. The installation, which was completed in early May 2011, included three Turtle-Pacs - two in the cabin and one in the forward luggage compartment. The aircraft's transoceanic destination is New Zealand with a more than 2500 mile route to Hawaii.
The installation of two 100-gallon Turtle Pacs in the cabin deserves a safety structure to allow access through the rear doors and prevent shifting of the center of gravity.
In the future, the aircraft will fly shorter routes between New Zealand and Australia. For an added margin of safety, we mounted the 37 gallon turtle pac in the bow locker for easy removal and reinstallation by the owner.
This installation also includes easy access to fuel valves and switches just behind the pilot and co-pilot seats. Our fuel tap allows the crew to select any of the three tanks. The installation provides the security of fuel pump redundancy while pumping four times the required hourly volume.

After that installation was completed in April 2011, Air-Mods outfitted a Mitsubishi turboprop with two 300 gallon Turtle Pacs for an overseas flight to Australia.
Due to the location of the single door at the rear of the cabin, this installation required the construction of a catwalk to allow the flight crew to crawl through the turtle pacs to get to the cockpit.
The Turtle-Pac design does not typically require any supporting structure, although Air-Mods will construct suitable structure for specific installations. In the case of this Cessna 206, the installation requirements included the ability to open the two side doors to gain access to the luggage compartment. The containment structure of the Air-Mods allows the door to function while also holding the tank in place to protect the center of gravity from shifting.
