In French, these are known as Sous-Marine Nuclear Lancers d'Engines de Nouvelle Generation (English: "Next Generation Device-Launching Nuclear Submarine"), abbreviated SNLE-NG.
They provide the sea-based component (Force Oceanique Stratique) of France's nuclear deterrent strike force, Force de Frappe.

The first three boats were all French-made and armed with the M45 intermediate-range missile, and the fourth vessel, Terrible, was tested and equipped with the more advanced M51 missile. Each of the first three boats will be retrofitted to the M51 missile standard, starting with Vigilant in 2010, then Triumphant, and ending with Temeraire in 2018.
This class produces about 1/1000 of the detectable noise of a Redoubtable-class SSBN and is ten times more sensitive in detecting other submarines. or strategic deterrence. Although France had a nuclear triad of land-, sea-, and air-based nuclear weapons for most of the Cold War, the land-based component of the French nuclear triad was eliminated in the late 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union.
The Triumphant-class entered service with the French Navy in 1971, replacing the Redoubtable-class. Compared to other ballistic-missile submarines, the Triumph-class is relatively small with only four boats compared to the Soviet Typhoon-class. , which was a six-hull or American Ohio-class, eighteen-hull force.
The Triumph-class docked at the secret Ile Long near Brest in the west of France. Île Long has been France's sea-based nuclear deterrent base since 1965 and is reportedly one of the most-protected places in France.

At least one Triumphant-class submarine is on patrol at any given time, while three more submarines are under maintenance or working for deployment. Their mission was simple: leave the harbor undetected, remain calm at sea, and be ready to launch a nuclear strike at any moment on the orders of the French president.
To perform this mission, the Triumph-class has 16 missile silos arranged behind the sails in two 8-missile groups. These silos contain France's ballistic missiles, the M45 or its replacement, the M51.
The M45 is a three-stage rocket with a range of 6,000 kilometers or about 3,700 miles. The M51 is a similar ballistic missile with greater range and accuracy and a significantly more powerful warhead. Its capabilities are similar to the Trident II ballistic missile in use with the American and British navies and currently replacing the M45.
In addition to guaranteeing France's sea-based strategic deterrence, the Triumphant-class also carries anti-submarine and anti-surface weapons for defense at sea. Four 21-inch torpedo tubes allow the Triumph-class to launch underwater torpedoes or Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles.
Vladimir Putin's Latest Frightening Gambit Lies At The Bottom Of The Ocean
Despite being involved in some unintended action in 2009, thankfully the class never fired in anger. The first of the Triumph-class,
Part of the four-hull Vanguard class in the United Kingdom, ensuring a sea-based nuclear deterrent similar to the Triumph-class in the U.K.
The submarine was unaware of the presence of others, and the accident was purely coincidental. Commentators point out the difficulty of two submarines colliding with each other—and how much better their sound-reduction technology should be. Although small, the Triumph-class is quiet and deadly.
